10 years in Germany, started wondering if I could actually afford to quit a career that I don't like anymore
I've lived here for 10 years now. Job's fine, pays fine, but lately I keep asking myself: do I actually have to push through this, or could I risk a different path? Change careers, go part time for a while, something.
I tried the calculators you find online to get a feel for it, but they kept falling short in the same two ways. First, they're built for one person, and I needed to see it for my whole family, what a career change or a rough year actually does to all of us, not just my own paycheck. Second, once I looked closer, most of them were quietly too optimistic: they show you a number years out without accounting for inflation, so it looks like everything's fine when it really isn't.
On top of that, German tax and pension rules were genuinely new to me. It took real effort to understand how any of it works, and I was hesitant to book time with a tax advisor because my German still isn't fluent enough to have that conversation comfortably.
So I ended up building something for myself to actually answer the question. And I'm wondering now if you actually know any tools that do just that? Would that be useful to you?
