Is it a bad idea to use token hungry models for chat sessions?

Everyone seems to suggest that I use the more powerful models for planning and keep the QA to the weaker models. But chats cost relatively little tokens, so wouldn't I be served well exploring technical topics by chatting to more powerful model?
