Paycheck to paycheck: the one change that gave me the most breathing room

For a long time my money situation was simple and stressful. Money came in, money went out, and the few days before payday were always tight. Advice that started with "invest 20 percent of your income" felt like it was written for someone else's life.

The single change that helped me most wasn't a fancy system. It was getting one small buffer in place so I wasn't living at exactly zero.

I started with a tiny goal. Not three months of expenses, just a couple hundred dollars sitting in a separate account I pretended didn't exist. It took a while, scraping small amounts together, but once it was there the constant low level stress dropped a lot. A surprise bill stopped being a crisis and became an annoyance.

It didn't fix everything. But that little gap between me and zero changed how the whole month felt.

If you've been paycheck to paycheck, or climbed out of it, what was the one change that gave you the most breathing room?
