roge - CLI for Roblox package versioning system
Roge is a CLI tool for interacting with Roblox packages that are module scripts. It's not a replacement for tools like rojo that require you to adhere to a concrete structure and basically transport the whole workflow to your local IDEs. With roge, you can choose to work on your module scripts in VSCode (and use modern tools like AI CLIs) and then push them to Roblox, which in return lets you pull their latest version back in Roblox Studio (or better, without any work at all with auto-update on). If you decide to go back to Roblox Studio, there is no problem as your package is already there since roge interacts with Roblox's own package versioning system.
The idea behind the use of this tool is that running Roblox Studio is very resource-heavy, and on weaker laptops (or Linux), it's not a pleasant experience. Therefore, if you code in a responsible way, you write module scripts that don't rely on anything else, which means you can write them anywhere. Writing them in VSCode is a more fun, and if you use any AI tools like Antigravity, you no longer have to copy-paste them into a web chat.
Installation and setup (more information on github)
- download and install the latest version from github
- download
- in the download directory where is the roge executable, open terminal and run this command
./roge setup, which will copy roge to your programs directory and add it to PATH - restart your terminal and verify installation by running
roge --version
- set up the required API key (Assets: read+write, Legacy Assets: manage) and author id
- get your user id (the number in your profile page URL)
- run the following command to set them in roge
roge config set --api-key <api_key> --author-id <user_id> --global
- scripting time
How to use
The tool offers everything required to not have to touch Roblox Studio during the entire package development lifecycle. The commands try to follow the logic of git. Here are the most common uses. To learn about other commands and more niche uses, refer to the project README.
- getting a local copy of a package from Roblox
roge clone <asset_id>
- pushing a new version to Roblox
roge push
- updating your local version with a version from Roblox
roge pullroge checkout <version>
- checkout the state of the project
roge log- lists out all project versionsroge diff- lists out differences between your local project and the latest Roblox version
- updating roge to the latest version
roge update
You can do much more, like change the package name or description, push a completely new package, customize settings for a specific package, or work on group packages. More information is available on github.
Recommended VSCode setup
Personally, I use the Luau Language Server Extension and set"luau-lsp.sourcemap.autogenerate": false in VSCode settings. Since I do not use Rojo, the sourcemap is not required.
If you like the project, please consider starring it on github. If you come across any issues, please open an issue there (no specific format is required, but provide as much info as possible).
