Is applying to jobs in the city I don't live in yet worth it?

I'm going to be moving there in January and I would like to have a job for when I go there for school. The jobs I'm looking for are just things like retail. I live 5 hours away tho so interviews would have to be online. I can start anytime really, I would move as soon as I get a job offer.

Would online interviews even be possible for these types of jobs? I'm not really sure if I should just start applying when I move so I can do interviews in person.

I'm ngl tho I've been having a really hard time finding a job so I'm not even sure if I should even go to school. I've had like ~15 interviews and never heard back, I really feel like there is something wrong with me.
