The Road so far- Midseason analysis

Book Spoilers Allowed

Hello friends!! Here's your Mod that likes to make theories of every shadow and every single whisper in the night! So of course, this is my kinda post right here.

As we know we are already 4 stops in on this strangely psychedelic tour, so I figured it was time to do a little recap of what we´ve been seeing so far and time for some funky theories.
I did a little rewatch of all episodes last weekend and surprise! This season 100% requires or is at least a lot more interesting on rewatch than originally thought.  Now I did it for purely “what if´s” and “whyyyy” reasons since I love to see where we are headed week to week and so far we hadn´t gotten a bit of a mystery box of a season quite like this one on this universe yet, so I'm really happy with that aspect of the season so far.
Do I, as a long time reader, have some reservations about some aspects of it? Sure thing, but I had a lot of those in season 1 and was quickly shut down in season 2, so patience is once more the name of the game here.

Fair warning, this post will contain book spoilers galore, weird ramblings, ridiculous hypotheses, etc. And I mostly want to know what's gonna happen in future episodes by officially released info available, so trailers and interviews will be referenced, but not screeners info since I've done my best to avoid those.

So first of all I wanted to mention a couple concepts that I keep seeing over and over again in every chapter

  • Parental figures being a fuckup, abusive or absolutely bad at it:
  • Parallels with seasons 1 and 2 constantly showing up
  • The Rule of 3
  • The Number 8
  • Akasha and Gabriella

We start on episode 1, the famous scene of the auction. Now beyond what´s already been said about the Raglan being Lestat theory, I personally like to think there might be more shenanigans going on than originally thought. Looking at Raglan and considering Daniel´s arc this season (and ominous words on the horizon) people have been heavily theorizing about a body switch, and I think this is the one I´m more convinced of.
The one thing Lestat says about Daniel amongst other data is that he had a short and eventful life as a vampire. Plus he says himself that he didn´t make his life particularly easy (and we see how much digging Daniel does to get the full story) so Raglan on that first scene is to me very interested in the collection only when the omniscient history of the events are introduced, even more so that all the raw material from him, so yeah, I'm betting for this one for now

Other fun stuff in that scene are the bottle of wine from 1863 (which might be relevant in the next episode considering the whole Akasha moment and it being right on time for a Marius introduction) and the fact that he says he starts at the point he could have stopped and prevented the events to happen. If we go by the Rule of 3, we see in the following episodes these kinds of moments as well, one is the Fang Gang and discovery of his vampirism, two when he faces the muses (Magnus and crashes the car deciding to carry on, and three the last episode when Gabriella comes back to convince him once more to get back on track.

Speaking of which, we see Gabriella constantly come back to Lestat in very vulnerable situations and leave him as well whenever he´s either more in command of himself or trying to show her how much he wants/needs her. First with the wolves she tries to rouse him to greet the villagers and heals his wounds (on her own way) but leaves as soon as he implies they belong to one another. Then she heals his face after the Fang Gang fight and Lestat himself claims he was going to stop the tour at this point when she decided to go back. And the third time she also shows up when he´s about to stop the tour to make him go for it again, to listen to the voices (which is a nice parallel to the villagers from the beginning). This time she corrects him about the 8 wolves, insinuating that he doesn´t just do the music for himself but rather to be heard and reach out. People who read Blood Communion must have freaked out a bit at the implications of the Communion as well I imagine.

The parallels with previous seasons with Gabriella and Lestat are also strong whenever they are on screen, we got the TOI-MOI conversation (You and me like Louis and Claudia on season 2). We also have a very similar situation when Gabriella sleeps with the man in the inn in episode 4 and Lestat goes through the whole place to stop her (similar to Louis swimming through the river in season 1). There is also the scene in the lake where she mentions the “dark monarchs” line (MORE ON THAT LATER) where they make a ring with blood in Lestat´s hand (left as in marriage) and we hear the background score, which is a modified version from the pilot when Louis is turned at the altar.
And it doesn't end there, he constantly calls for Louis “Come to me” the same as he does for Gabriella in the texts he keeps sending her on episode 1.
Now I really need to talk about the flashbacks, because they are a lot more complex than we think at first sight. We see in order of appearance Gabriella, Nicky and Marius scenes, which relate to the order that their respective episodes are coming out. We also notice some intertwined visions of Gabriella laying down on the couch before Lestat turns her and what we believe to be Akasha´s hand (also lying down somewhere with Marius over her presumably). The mother aspect and similarities between Gabriella and Akasha are constant throughout the season.
There is also the one about Lestat being turned by Magnus, him turning Louis and then him floating above the air in what we now know is a scene from next weeks episode, when Marius and Akasha presumably show up. This one with Lestat floating in the air and shaking is also present during the sex montage in the elevator when he speaks about blood always being superior to sex.

Episode 2 has the most references to the number 8 we ever see, the 8 wolves, the 8 people in the ark, the 8 billion people in the world (and if you count from before, the Fang Gang 10 members in the hallway, 2 taken down by Sam and Daniel, sooooo 8 again against Lestat).

We also have a very foreboding moment when Lestat is looking at Gabriella outside of the bus talking to Daniel and saying to the band “YOU SAW SOMETHING YOU DIDN´T WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE” which does sound incredibly foreboding after the next episodes. I should mention here that one thing mentioned in the episode later is that allegedly Gabriella also came back to heal or see Lestat after Louis and Claudia left him for dead in New Orleans (this during the restaurant scene) so that makes it 3 times that she´s been there to heal him from his physical wounds.

While at the strip club Gabriella makes her first mention of the Great Conversion, also spoken about by Talamasca and Armand, both worried about the amount of vampires being out of control. She on the other hand seems very much for the whole thing, even making Daniel ask Lestat about it publicly. My guess is that she's heavily involved in the whole affair. She leaves and comes back from mysterious locations, she doesn't tell Lestat much of anything and in the 4 episode we see that she wants him to reach out to others, to become a sort of figure for them. Now my issue with it is that in episode 4 there's a very heavy reference to Messiah Lestat (as Daniel says in the bus), and then that moment of him being shot in the hand being very reminiscent of a stigmata, so if Lestat is going to “Lead” or be a figure to this Great Conversion I fear the third time Gabriella leaves Lestat big time might be t his fortune against those against the Great Conversion, as a Martyr for that cause. Which conveniently would put him in the hands of another saviour Mother figure that instead of taking from him gives him what he wants (we mostly see Gabriella take blood from Lestat, but not so much the other way around, imagine someone that does the opposite). Gabriella has sent Lestat to his death (on his own words) when sending him to the wolves before, so her using him for a bigger purpose of her dream described in episode 4 is not too much of a stretch (specially since he tells her his fantasy of killing the family and she fullfilst it, him fulfilling her of being some sort of Dark Monarch without himself in the picture would be a nice fucked up circle).

Moving on, you guys know what a multiple of 8 is ? 32, the same number of kills Louis did in Dubai (including good old David)

And a final comment of the rule of 3 to focus on Daniel, 3 times he fucked up a marriage in the whole show so far (San Francisco interview, Dubai Interview, Book publication), the man complains about not having cool gifts but holy hell, the Divorce Gift allegations keep on growing.

Moving into episode 3 his evil influence continues, as there is a wedding destroyed in the beginning of the episode, Lestat and Nicky's painful separation and Baby Jenks and Killer having a very abrupt end to their honeymoon. Daniel must be stopped.

We have that incredible setting of Lestat, Daniel and Gabriella speaking and taunting each other in front of the cameras. Both Daniel and Lestat  aren't directly speaking to each other and how this works as a fun setting to Lestat´s joke to Daniel is fantastic. Check out how after Lestat starts his Mind trick and until he gets up we do not see any of the screens again, only when he goes away do we see it again so as to not give away the trick. This whole setting also brings up one of the more popular theories about Gabriella, since we see her in the documentary footage in previous scenes does it mean she's actually there and not being an illusion at all (as a mind trick of Akasha as proposed). I´d really like to dig into this a bit more after next week's episode, where we might get some reveals in the Regina front for this theory as well. Remember that the black and white footage is the only tangible proof of anything we might have and it was used perfectly in this episode to illustrate that with the Mind Trick.

We have another rule of 3 with the 3 pieces of art mentioned by Lestat
- Three Graces, by Rafael https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Graces_(Raphael)
-Birds in Space (SERIOUSLY MESSED UP TO BRING ATLANTIS INTO THIS NOW) by Brâncuși https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_in_Space
- Invisible cities by Calvino https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Las_ciudades_invisibles
And all of those are extremely good to read about considering the themes of the season, especially number 2 so do take a look further there.

We go further into parallel land with Louis´s revenge path against Bruce, where the scene of him invading their home is once more direct visual reference to the similar trip with the Theatre Des Vampires in season 2 (does this make Armand the possum in this allegory? Would you let him lick your face like he does there as well?... I´m gonna be quiet now), except him now having at least accepted his vampiric nature has reversed the roles and he “owns the night” all around. He also owns the Cloud Gift, plenty other night related business and Lestats 45% merch revenues.
The way he goes about his revenge on this episode is also very similar to his first big revenge moment as a vampire when a certain Alderman is the first time meet a very angry Louis on a very bad day having his just comeuppance on another monster. And later on Paris. And Dubai. Ask agent Talbot about it if you don't believe me

We have another mention of the 8 wolves into this episode (first by Daniel and then by Nicky in the flashback) and how everyone keeps repeating it (so far almost as many times as Lestat mentions Akasha) but the other important bit of the banter is the easter egg about twin witches burning at the stake, which is big time featured in QOTD. Plus, judging by current trailers we might see more of in future episodes, so lookout for any more references there.
As the scene progresses we see Gabriella provoking Lestat more and more, which culminates with her and Jarda making a spectacle for all the Cast and Crew to hear, which is very much exactly what she´s done before (technically after) in episode 4 when they are in the flashback in the old Italian city and she makes a spectacle to bring him to her as well.

There are two important bits that directly relate to a previous season of the show:
- Nicolas begging Lestat for the Dark Gift/Louis begging Lestat to save Claudia, both times he decides to do it, once warned by Gabrielle, and the second time warned by experience that it´s a terrible idea. Later in the episode we even see Lestat, Gabriella and Armand in the theater noticing this while a very familiar play seems to be happening on stage (no Santiago yet tho).
- The second one is of course the direct parallel of Claudia and Lestat´s assault being one of the main scenes of the episode. This is the prayer Lestat was saying at the moment:
Psalms 118:15-21
Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous: “The Lord’s right hand has done mighty things! The Lord’s right hand is lifted high; the Lord’s right hand has done mighty things!” I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the Lord has done. The Lord has chastened me severely, but he has not given me over to death. Open for me the gates of the righteous; I will enter and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord through which the righteous may enter. I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation.

A special bit for book readers is Lestat describing Nicolas final moments and his reaction while being on the fire, which is the exact same ration book Lestat has when thinking about the witches burning and his fear of the nothingness that was a big theme of his conversations with Nicolas in the books as well. More red meat for redditte indeed.

On episode 4 we start with “Regina” and Louis meeting each other in what seems to be a usual thing for him, while she says in later moments that she looked him up and found out who he is, she already says his name on this particular first moment of the episode, so that was a bit of a red herring to me (or he just keeps paying by card, but I like to get nitpicky).
Either way, during the whole episode we don´t see anyone else seeing her except for Louis (as in recognizing her as Claudia) which considering last episodes camera tricks is making me look for moments when she´s not in the diner or in the same pale uniform all the time to confirm her actual presence/identity. This of course from the many debates going on if she's an illusion ( a very popular one for many characters this one), or a ghost, or a trick made by a certain Merrick Mayfair for some reason. Considering she was once in Amsterdam (as in the main Talamasca Motherhouse in all 3 tv universe shows) made me wonder about this as well.
My greatest surprise was actually seeing her in the Green poster earlier today. this threw me off a bit because I had a thought about Gabriella and Merrick or some similar thing going on which complemented the Great Conversion. But her being the Green Team  makes me believe she might be, as her name suggests, on the side of a certain Queen instead. Perhaps if she's a product of Merrick's meddling maybe a distraction for Louis to keep Lestat isolated, or just payback from Ghost Claudia as previously thought of. Imagine if Louis losing a leg is more of a consequence of this plot than the actual QOTM plot, that would be crazy (and I like it like that).
This is my original note on that whole subplot which I believe is relevant here

REGINA CALLED HIM BACK (GIRL WHY, UNLESS YOU EVIL)

The whole setting of Louis offering her money for her pretending to be Claudia seems to be a very similar arrangement to the one he had with Miss Lily on season one.

Moving on, Lestat and Gabriella´s medieval adventures are fully going in the flashbacks, we see them as usual making their own stories about themselves to the outside lookers, just like in episode 2 and whenever someone asks about Sofia in the present.
We also see the return of dear Alwx, who seems to have joined a wonderful cult AA group that has been giving him all the support he needs (and more than he might even know or remember). They even gave him a pretty bracelet similar to Armand´s one later in the episode, very mindful, very demure (run).
Now I´d like to stop here for a bit because we know what happened last time a young member of Lestat´s group left and came back after meeting another vampire. If my sacrificial Jesus Lestat theory (yes, I´m calling it that) is real then we know who might hold the knife to his throat this time around. Poor Alex (sort of).

Since we are in the subject, let me tell you a little something about 18th century  Armand on this scene, his whole appearance this season and possible future plot is directly related to his former role as the Coven leader from Paris, from his outfit to him always being in the shadows and same color palette from the past is telling us a lot about what he's doing at the moment. The best throwback to this is him and Lestat during the diss track Big Boss, which is both referencing the trial in Paris and the first time Armand saw him in the theatre when they met. Armand is also recruiting or being followed out of the show by at least two other people, so he's definitely preparing to deal with the GC on his own.

There is also the pending question about what´s going on with Daniel. We hear him referencing his shit blood, Lestat taunting him about needing antibodies and the weird vampire bond he shares with Armand (freaks!!). Do we believe this might be related to too many vampires popping up everywhere? Daniel's previous state when turned as some folks have already theorized before? I´m leaning towards the first option since we know the vampiric essence formerly known as Amel (and forwardly) is stretched a lot by this time of the story, so hopefully is more in that vein (pun intended).

The episode ends with a throwback to Louis turning and how he described being seduced by Lestat. Of course, he mocks him one more time for it as the ghost muses of his past haunt the whole ordeal in the bus.
Of course we also have him starting to record his album with the song Nothing to loose, and a very careful what you wish for moment from him singing:

I need a mean, mean mom
I need a ravenous queen

Soo I'm totally into the whole colour theory being a great way to divide the characters, but  going further we might get some surprises. I fully believe that the whole Akasha/ Gabriella references are insane throughout the season.

Check this pic of her being watched over by a statue and the other one of what seems to be Marius lair and look for similarities there. Are these related? Is she working for the Queen, being possessed by the Queen, or completely on different sides without knowing? If she´s propelling the Great Conversion and trying to get Lestat to rally others for her Dark Monarch fantasy, wouldn´t this be enough to wake an ancient one who likes to have the last word? And wouldn´t Lestat fall under such Queen´s spell much easier if the one he looks for the most would disappoint him/use/let him to die for her personal goals?

I do like that it would kinda break the colours theory. The Great conversion being the Pink side and those against it the Green side, inadvertently Akasha being more in line with those on the green side if those are opposite after all would be a cool moment, since they are technically right, but following her will also have devastating consequences for all. Damned if you do, and damned if you don´t (haha, all Because the Queen of the Damned… I'll see myself out again)

In conclusion I've spent the last 7 days ranting in my head about all of this and needed to put it to words, I´ll end with my remaining question for the next time I get a little manic and decide to do this again (very soon after episodes 5 and 6 I'll do it against and recap/correct from here as well)

The fuck is Talamasca doing?
