[Layout Ideas] How to maximize a Baja shelf and have decent room for swimming, in a small backyard

Hi everyone,

We are in the planning phase for a backyard pool at a new build. The house overall is not large and we know the size of the backyard is on the smaller side. Having said that, the plans are still flexible so the pool's size, shape, and location can all be changed, and I’m looking for clever layout ideas to come up with a good use of space.

The Space & Constraints

  • Climate: Hot, dry Mediterranean.
  • Yard Balance: I don’t want the pool to completely dominate the footprint. We absolutely need to retain enough dry space for a dedicated outdoor dining area and a grassy/play zone for our two kids. The grass area will likely be in the 3m side curtilage along the length of the house (that is also where the entrance is - there will be a gate at the front).
  • Structural Constraint: We have a basement garage underneath. The pool placement is flexible, but it cannot be positioned directly over the underground parking area. I'm attaching a plan of the basement to get an idea.

Our Pool Priorities

  • The Depth Profile: We want a usable, unobstructed swim zone so adults can actually swim (we were thinking a maximum depth of 1.5 metres - approx 5ft). I think this is good enough.
  • Sun / Baja shelf for lounging and kids play: My wife and I love lounging on Baja shelves. We want to maximize the shelf size for adults to chill and also for the kids to splash, but without it dominating the pool - I still want a decent amount of space for adults to swim. I do know we don't have enough space for a larger pool - I'm just asking this as a hail mary before giving up and accepting that I can't have everything I want in this small build.

What pool shapes or layouts (L-shaped, sunshelf at the side, etc) give the best of both worlds - a large shelf and a decent swim lane, while keeping the overall footprint compact.

I’ve attached the 2D plans showing the yard boundaries and the basement parking footprint underneath.

Would love to see examples or layouts if anyone has managed to balance a great shelf and a good swim lane in a tighter yard! Thanks.
