Recording bass: downpick vs crosspick

Greetings. I’m helping some friends record some baselines on a couple metal / post-hardcore tracks. When playing live, I would crosspick the lines, but for recording, I’m thinking about just downpicking as much as possible to have a consistent, driving sound.

I’ve played bass a long time, though I’m primarily a guitarist, and my experience actually tracking bass is limited compared to guitar.

I imagine some of you might say “try both ways and see which sound you like”, and I’ll definitely be doing that. But my question is, is it a common practice to track bass guitar in a way that you wouldn’t actually play it live? Are there pro bassists out there that favor downpicking for a consistent sound on recordings when they’d otherwise crosspick live?
