First chapter for my story, sort of a prologue. I need sincere feedback.

Title: Meridia: Stories of Struggles, Lofty Ideals and Hope for a Better Future.
Genre: Political Thriller/Slice-of-life collection of standalone stories

Sypnopsis: A collection of stories from the Meridian Federation - a newly founded multiethnic federation
navigating through its myriad of problems, all while being besieged by enemies both internal and external, and upholding the lofty promises of prosperity and freedom it told.
What needed: general impressions, critique on prose, grammar, logic, cohesion and character depiction/development.
