Pest control company threatening to go to collections for subscription service I didn't want. I only wanted a one time spray.

Contracts

Location: California

When I purchased my house, I hired this pest control company for a one-time treatment before moving in. That was the only service I wanted and paid for.

The following month I received a $50 invoice and learned I had apparently been enrolled in a recurring subscription plan for a year where I pay $50.00 per month and they come out to spray quarterly. I immediately called and explained that I only wanted a one-time treatment and asked them to cancel it. They were extremely combative and refused and told me that if I did not pay, they would send the account to collections and pursue "legal" action. They had no business tact. They went straight to the threats.

Basically what happened was, when I was signing their iPad to pay the bill, I clicked and signed up for a one-year agreement which was not my intention. My only intention was to purchase a one-time pest control service. I was super busy and distracted with so many other things that day, I didn't catch it.

I don't believe I should be required to pay for services that were never performed. I also did not appreciate being threatened with collections and legal action. The company completed the one-time treatment that I specifically requested, and I paid for that service. Since then, no additional treatments have been performed. Because their service is provided quarterly and the next treatment has not occurred, I do not believe it is fair to charge me for recurring services that I never wanted or intended to sign up for.

The only thing I'm concerned about is my credit. I have an excellent credit score, and I don't want this to affect it. If they send this to collections, do I have the right to dispute it and can I win, or should I just give in and pay it? Any advice would be most appreciated.
