Monthly finance audit in 15 minutes: review exceptions only, not every line

Disclosure: I built this — Wealth Pilot (wealthpilots.xyz). Not financial advice, just sharing what I made and why.

Every month I audit my personal finances.

Not daily expense tracking. Not “log every coffee.” A monthly check for anything out of expectation:

  • Did spending spike somewhere I didn’t notice?
  • Any subscriptions still charging?
  • Is my net worth moving the right direction?
  • Did anything in my bank exports look wrong?

For years that meant Excel.

Download CSVs → clean dates → categorize merchants by hand → pivot tables → compare to last month → Ctrl+F for weird charges.

2–3 hours. Sometimes I skipped a month. When I skipped, surprises piled up.

The insight that changed the workflow

I didn’t need another app asking me to review every line.

I needed:

Review exceptions only, not every line.

Import once → auto-organize → surface what looks off → fix the uncertain stuff → look at the dashboard and decide.

That’s the whole product thesis.

What I built: Wealth Pilot

A personal finance cockpit for monthly reconciliation, not daily guilt.

Flow:

  1. Export CSV from your bank (Chase, Amex, etc.) — no bank password sharing
  2. Upload to Wealth Pilot
  3. AI organizes transactions and flags uncertain rows (category, duplicates, missing data)
  4. You review only those rows — not 200 lines of groceries and payroll
  5. Dashboard: net worth, spending breakdown, budget health, top merchants

Hours → ~15 minutes.

Where trust actually comes from (imo)

Finance tools fail when they pretend to be 100% right.

If the AI is ~80% sure on a category, I want that row loud and visible — not buried in a “everything looks fine” UI.

So the workflow is:

  • Uncertain rows show up clearly during import/review
  • I approve or fix in a few clicks
  • Next month, the system should learn from that correction (merchant/category preferences), not make me re-teach it

That’s where a finance tool earns belief — not hype, not “AI magic,” just show your work and get better when I correct you.

What it’s NOT

  • Not a trading app
  • Not crypto
  • Not “open the app every day or fail”
  • Not social comparison / guilt UX

What it IS

  • Private batch import
  • Exception-first review
  • Calm dashboard for “what changed, where money went, what to do next”

Questions for other SideProject builders / finance nerds:

  1. Do you audit monthly, or only when something feels wrong?
  2. Would you trust CSV import over linking bank credentials to a startup?
  3. For AI in finance — what would make you trust the “uncertain row” flow?

Happy to share more about the build, CSV parsing, or how we handle low-confidence categorization.
