If I can't get hired, what do I do?
I'm 31, just graduated my M.A. in English, and I'm applying to academic advising, college app coaching, writing/humanities tutoring, and executive functioning coaching roles in the SF Bay.
4.0 Berkeley undergrad, 4.0 from a fully funded M.A. with the university's top fellowship, 7 years of part-time experience (while in school) doing teaching, tutoring, and coaching for all the things above, awards for teaching and leadership, top English student award, Phi Beta Kappa, etc. I have strong references, too.
In my interviews, I'm emphasizing that I approach my sessions with empathy and humor. I get my mentees calm before we start, ease their overwhelm, help them shed their academic shame. I connect with them as people, which helps them trust me and be open to the support I can offer them. And I also *have* ADHD and struggled myself with EF issues before finding a mentor who helped me finally launch seven years ago. I went from a 1.98 high school GPA to top of my class at a T15, and I understand that that is a heck of a comeback. I am grateful for the opportunities I had that helped me get where I am. More than that, though, I consider myself living proof that the exact methods these companies utilize can work wonders for even the most resistant students. Bad grades in one's past need not dictate their future. And it's because I have been that resistant student that I am so motivated to help others find their stride before age 24 (how long it took me).
I am genuinely not sure what I'm doing wrong. I don't lead with my achievements; in fact, I don't mention them at all during interviews. The recruiters can read my resume and decide what to do with that information themselves. I'm there, rather, to demonstrate my cultural fit, that I'm warm and friendly, that I can work well with a team toward a common goal, and that I'm motivated enough to not need spoon-feeding every step of the way. Every single thing in my resume and demeanor has been presented to show what a hard worker I am, and it's not enough. I've been applying for six months, at least, and I just can't get anything besides 1099 gigs. The jobs exist, I just keep getting ghosted, and I'm not sure what more I can be doing.
If I can't get hired, I will eventually be out of a place to stay and food to eat. I'm not sure where I'll go or what I'll do then. I just never thought I could work myself halfway to death these past seven years for the ideal resume for this niche, only to be fully skipped over. If I can't get a job working in the one niche I am uniquely qualified for, how the heck am I supposed to secure anything else?
