Convince John to Stay bugged for me as a guest

I’ve searched and searched and seen lots of people having this issue on their own islands. But I’m playing with my wife on her island and I’m stuck still having the “convince John to stay” quest. I’ve done his requests and spent over 100k but the box for “spending money” won’t check. We already have John’s full shop on the island now and she’s working towards a museum but I’m stuck with this quest with no way to progress it.
