What is SKILL.md? A simple way to publish operating instructions for AI agents
AI agents are getting more capable, yet repeatable work still breaks when the instructions live only in a chat.
SKILL.md gives an agent a clear playbook:
- when to use a capability
- what inputs to collect
- what steps to run
- what output to return
- what checks to complete before handoff
It pairs well with agent.json, llms.txt, OpenAPI, MCP, and .agent records because each file has a clean job. agent.json identifies the agent. SKILL.md explains how a task should run.
We wrote a practical explainer here:

Curious how teams are thinking about public agent instructions. Would you publish SKILL.md files for your agents, or keep those workflows internal?
