Is there a reason for all the air swinging in the prequel duels?

Don’t get me wrong the duels are amazing and literally my favorite duels by far but why is there such much air swinging? Not only that but it seems like they are attacking their opponents sword instead of going for actual hits. Is this for confusion of the opponent/something similar or is this just for the fights to be extended and look good?
