Is it possible to fit an original laser assembly from a 9001 model into a 1001?

My original 1001 model is having some issues reading discs, and I have a healthy 9001 model that has a laser assembly I could use for it. Would the assembly's ribbon connector fit into the 1001's connector or is an adapter or some other modification needed?
