Here’s an interesting tale for those interested in witches

There was a Scottish midwife called Agnes Sampson who was reported to have attempted to assassinate king James I with storm magic

King James had just married Anne of Denmark and the danish court were fearful of witches and black magic. So king James decided to fetch his new bride and sailed off IN WINTER from Scotland.

Within minutes of setting sail a sudden storm appeared almost capsizing the royal boat and forcing it back onto the shoreline. King James appears to have been shaken up on the experience demanding to know why the weather suddenly changed humiliating him.

Witnesses claimed that a woman known as Agnes Sampson was seen casting spells from the shoreline with her coven in order to drown the king.
They claimed that she had used a dead cat and tied body parts of a dead man to the cat and plunged it into the water where Agnes cast the spell by saying the words “contrary wind” which then forced the wind to turn tail and shred the boat sails.

What is very unusual in this is that when Agnes was arrested and brought to Scotland’s old town hall on the royal mile.
The king himself questioned her.
In the uk courts the judge sits as representative and embodiment of the crown but poor Agnes has the actual king sat there as judge, jury and victim (still angry)

her private parts were inspected and reports of a witches mark were seen (probably a mole or spot) and after torture she confessed that the devil appeared to the coven as a mysterious black man and told them how to kill the king which they dulely attempted to.

Agnes Sampson was taken to the scaffold on Castlehill, where she was garroted then burnt at the stake on 28 January 1591. (Picture of the actual execution site attached)
