Not keeping a gift isn't selfish.

If someone gifts you something whether it be for a special occasion or without prompt you have no obligation to keep, use, etc it. And the person gifting said gift should not be upset if said person does not like, need, or want said gift.

That doesn't mean you should be unappreciative or not show/say thanks but it doesn't make you a bad person for not keeping it.
