Road to Secret Wars #5 - Agent Carter (Season 2)
I'm sure like many others, I've decided to do a chronological re-watch of the entire MCU and the main bits of any connecting universes. This includes but is not limited to: the movies and D+ shows, the Netflix and ABC shows, the Sony and Fox movies, and choice pieces of most every Spider-Man cartoon. I do not expect to be finished by the release of Doomsday, and so I am considering the release of Secret Wars as my deadline.
After I watch something, I wanted to come on here and discuss a little bit about what I thought of each project. After a small break so I could enjoy the beaches of Bermuda, I'm back to talk about the final season of Agent Carter.
I have mixed feelings about this season. In my opinion, the best part of the first season is the dynamic between Peggy and Jarvis, and this season really digs deep into that. I consider this is a really good decision on their part, their chemistry is the highlight of the whole show. On the other hand, there was an equally large focus on a Peggy Carter love triangle that I found particularly boring. Me and my wife agreed that Peggy should just dump them both and run off with Dottie.
Moving on, the villains this season were complex and interesting. A lot better than the 'evil commie' Russians from the first season. I find it an extremely odd choice to change Madam Masque so much but the character they created had depth and the actress was a joy to watch chew scenery on screen. Vernon Masters and the Manfredi crime boss were both well written foils for her as well. All together it was a great ride, but it felt odd that the second season was such a clean break from the first. Very few mentions of Leviathan or hints toward the off-screen relationship between Arnim Zola and Dr. Faustus that no doubt had a hand in the creation of the Winter Soldier.
Speaking of MCU connections, the Zero Matter influences the future story in multiple ways, particularly with Cloak and Dagger. I'm interested to see how that plays out since I never finished that show. We also have mentions of other future important buzzwords, including Stark's hover car, gamma rays, and palladium. We even have an out-of-nowhere Easter egg introducing Kid Colt to the MCU! Will we ever see him in an Avengers movie? (I'm joking. Mostly.)
But now I have to talk about the giant ugly elephant in the room. For continuity nerds like me, this is a huge disappointment. The show was cancelled on a cliffhanger. Who shot Jack Thompson? What was in Carter's redacted file? What happened to the remaining members of the Council of Nine? How did we go from Leviathan to the modern-day Red Room we know and hate? What was Howard Stark's 'Malibu Project' and when did he get around to starting S.H.I.E.L.D. with Peggy? Most importantly, where did Dottie run off to and why doesn't she have a spin-off show!?
In regards to Secret Wars, will any of this matter? Probably not, but I still like the idea of some of these cliffhangers being sewn up in a cold-open of Doomsday. We still have never seen a Cap and Peggy action team-up in the MCU, and a scene in an alternate 1950s with Cap and Peggy Carter: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. would be really cool if they took on Leviathan or the Council of Nine. 'It's all connected' is still a possibility!
Obviously this whole post is a little tongue-in-cheek, but rest assured I had a lot of fun with this flawed but enjoyable season of television. When to place it in the watch order? After Season 1, of course! I still firmly believe that the entire WWII era of the MCU works best when watched together.
And that's all I have to say about 'Agent Carter'. Let me know what you liked or didn't like about this one, and if you have any questions or comments about my project in general I would love to hear them. I hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts, and I will be back as soon as I can with another piece on the road to Secret Wars!
