AITAH for not wanting to give more money to my parents?
I currently live at home with my mom and dad. Our home has been in my family for 250 years now; it's outdated, but comfortable. My dad and I have a contentious relationship, to put it kindly. He has always been a bit overbearing, wanting to have a say in how I live my life and the decisions I make, even though I’m an adult now. It’s very hard for us to compromise.
Anyways, I pay them a set amount each month for rent, utilities, and groceries; this comes to $600 per month. Last week, my dad came to me and told me I would need to start paying $750 per month. He said that because they provide the food and drinks for the household, they can raise my monthly costs when they want to. He didn't even give me an opportunity to share my thoughts or compromise to a lower amount. This ended up turning into a huge fight, and I ended the conversation by telling him that I shouldn’t be forced to pay more without being able to provide my opinion.
Over the course of the week, I will admit that I got petty. I started protesting in minor ways, like refusing to eat the meals they prepared, and "accidentally" getting my black nail polish onto their fancy feather couch cushions.
It all came to a head the other day, when I "accidentally' knocked my dad's favorite loose tea leaves into the dirty sink water. It was a lot, and I know that tea was expensive. But I just needed to get my point across.
Now it’s all out war in our house. My mom, Francine, is on my side. My dad is saying as the parent, it’s his house and his rules, and he can charge me whatever he wants. I’m telling him that I will move out, cut off all financial support, and live life independently if he is not willing to work with me. I know what an asset I am in this situation, and it could ruin them as they depend on me.
