I've spent the last year and a half deep in India's heritage sites for work, and one thing keeps nagging at me that I want to put to this sub, because I don't think it's only a "government is slow" answer.

We have some of the most extraordinary monuments on the planet. Hampi, Konark, Fatehpur Sikri, the cave complexes at Ajanta and Ellora, the stepwells, the forts in Rajasthan. The actual cultural assets are second to none.

Now think about the experience of visiting one. A signboard with a paragraph of text, often faded. Maybe a guide of wildly variable quality who may or may not be making half of it up. A QR code that links to a Wikipedia page if you're lucky. Average visitor walks the loop in 12 to 15 minutes, takes a few photos, and leaves having understood almost nothing about what they just saw.The information exists. Ajanta's paintings have been studied for over a century. The acoustics of the Diwan-i-Khas at Fatehpur Sikri are documented. The metallurgy of the Qutub iron pillar is in academic papers. None of it reaches the person actually standing there.

A few things I genuinely wonder:

Is this a cultural thing, where we treat heritage as something to revere from a distance rather than understand up close?

Or is it just that interpretation has never had an owner, an institution whose actual mandate is "make sure the visitor walks away understanding this place"?

And for people here who've traveled abroad: where have you seen a heritage site done genuinely well, and what did they get right that we don't?

Our monuments are world-class. The visitor experience at most of them is stuck in 1995. Why?
