If You Want to Love America, Just Drive Across It

A Fourth of July 250th birthday wish...

Every once in a while, someone says something that snaps your perspective back into place. With visitors from all over the world here for the FIFA World Cup, I heard a quote that hit hard:

After six years of living full‑time on the road, I can tell you — that’s the truest thing I’ve ever heard.

🚐 Trading the High Seas for the Highways

Back in 2020, life was upside down. Instead of staying stuck in the same routine, we sold the house, let go of the stuff, bought an RV, and hit the road. What started as a way to breathe turned into a way to live.

We didn’t just travel through America.
We started seeing America.

👀 Seeing Home Through Fresh Eyes

Now, with the country celebrating its 250th birthday, it’s the international visitors who are reminding us what we’ve forgotten.

They’re not focused on political maps.
They’re focused on:

  • the Grand Canyon at sunrise
  • Texas BBQ that tastes like a religious experience
  • strangers who help them find hidden trailheads
  • small‑town diners where the pie is made with actual love

Drive across America and you don’t find the “us vs. them” narrative.
You find generosity, beauty, pride, and people who genuinely care about their communities.

🎆 A 250th Birthday Wish

As fireworks go up this Fourth of July, I’m thinking about the thousands of days spent crossing this country. The back-roads, the national parks, the tiny towns, the big cities — all of it.

The “media version” of America is a cramped room.
The “highway version” of America is a cathedral.

If you’ve forgotten what makes this place special, take a drive.
Any direction. Any distance.
Just go.

You’ll remember.A Fourth of July Reflection. Every once in a while, someone says something that snaps your perspective back into place. With visitors from all over the world here for the FIFA World Cup, I heard a quote that hit hard:“If you want to hate America, listen to the media.
But if you want to love America, just drive across it.”After six years of living full‑time on the road, I can tell you — that’s the truest thing I’ve ever heard.🚐 Trading the High Seas for the Highways.
