How to tell my friends and family I’m back with my ex?
I could really use some outside perspective because I’ve been stuck in my own head about this.
About a year ago, my fiancé and I ended our engagement after being together for years. It was a really painful breakup, and we went no contact for several months. During that time, I slowly started rebuilding my life and processing everything.
A few months ago, we reconnected. We had a lot of honest conversations about what went wrong, and we’ve decided to give the relationship another chance. We’ve officially gotten back together, and overall things between us have been much healthier than before.
Here’s where I’m struggling: I haven’t told most of the important people in my life.
When we first got back together, I thought I wanted to wait and see if it was actually going to work before telling anyone. That felt reasonable at the time. But now enough time has passed that it feels like this is a real relationship again, and I’ve realized I can’t avoid the conversation forever.
The problem is that I’m absolutely paralyzed by the idea of telling people. I’m not worried that my boyfriend will react badly—I know he’ll understand. I’m scared of everyone else. My family and close friends were there for me through the breakup, and many of them had strong opinions about how everything ended. I’m terrified they’ll be disappointed, think I’m making a mistake, judge me, or feel like I’m undoing all the progress I made after the breakup.
The anxiety has gotten so bad that I’ve been avoiding texts and conversations because I know I’ll eventually have to tell people. It’s become something I think about constantly.
Has anyone been in a situation like this? How did you tell people you got back together with an ex after a significant breakup? How did they react? And if you were the friend or family member, how would you want someone to tell you?
I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have been on either side of this.
