Anime’s that aren’t tooo Anime?

What to Watch?

TL;DR Any anime recommendations without tropes like power scaling, time slowing down for inner monologues, constant shock that people aren’t what they seem etc.

I need help. This is not meant to be insulting to anyone who enjoys this kind of stuff. I loved YuYu and DB as a kid, but I am 30 and do not have enough years left in me to handle it.

I'm looking for a good anime recommendation, but I have serious problems with 90% of the anime I have ever seen. I just got out of a 6-year relationship and am looking for the type of comfort only a great anime can provide, but I am a little particular. For reference, I generally prefer 90s anime or miniseries/movies, as it feels more cohesive and has less of what I will soon explain to be my issue with some anime. In this case, I am looking for something newer. My favorite modern anime are Chainsaw Man and EdgeRunners, but I also really liked AoT, sort of. This is where my issues with the medium begin, but if the show is as interesting as AoT, I can handle a little of it. I lack the necessary anime/media vocabulary to explain it, so I will describe a scene of what I do not like.

Hero gets punched and falls to his knees, coughs blood, cut to close-up on childhood best friend/love interest worried face, her inner monologue begins, "Hero, get up." Cut to a washed-out flashback we have already seen three times. Childhood love interest loses kite, falls in river, falls off bike, etc. Child hero fixes this issue with ease and gives his signature boyish smile; child love interest has a blank stare. Cut to the love interest in the present. moment of hesitation, shakes her head as she raises her hand and yells, "Hero, you can't give up. Remember when" precedes to verbally retell the story we just saw. Struggling Hero stands, wipes blood from mouth with back of hand, gives signature boyish smile, *cool eyes edition. He wins. This scene lasts 10 minutes, with constant monologue and cutting in and out of the flashback to still frames of all characters present, mouths agape.

I just can't do it anymore. Any ideas? Demon Slayer looks fun but seems like it could be this kind of show. While I usually prefer stuff that has one cohesive story, I also find comfort in more episodic stuff with a little development here and there, like Bebop. I do not, on the other hand, like arcs, or at least in the way they are used in anime. I prefer stories, episodic or not, to have a place it is heading.
