Elevation of Insight Checks

Need Advice: Other

Dear DMs,

Recently, my party received several clues that did not seem connected at first, even though they already had all the pieces needed to understand what was going on.

In situations like this, I sometimes let a player make an Insight check, not to read a creature’s intentions, but to determine whether their character can connect the clues and recognize the larger pattern.

I have seen Brennan Lee Mulligan do something similar a few times on Dimension 20, and I have to admit that it feels intuitive to me. One of my players pointed out that Insight is not technically intended to be used this way, which is really fair. Still, I am tempted to interpret this skill a little more broadly, elevating it so to say.

My reasoning is that Insight is not only about detecting whether someone is lying. It can also represent a character’s understanding of people, motives, relationships, institutions, and social situations. Once the party has gathered enough information about different people, factions, and events, it seems reasonable that an insightful character might recognize how those pieces fit together.

At the same time, I can see the argument that this should instead be an Investigation check, an Intelligence/wisdom check, or simply something the players have to work out themselves without rolling.

How would you handle this? Is using Insight to connect narrative or social clues a reasonable 'elevation' of the skill?
