Nothing Saving (Dummy Me)

Hello,

I have read through a few posts about this but everything is too advanced for me to understand to be honest

My console doesn't seem to save.

I mainly bought it to replay all the Pokemon games (as an RPG fan, not a Pokefanatic)

I figured out it doesn't save through the menu but can be saved through the solid state shortcuts.

The problem is after taking a break I forgot which was the load shortcut and which was the save shortcut... as a result I subsequently used the Save shortcut on the homescreen of the game instead of the Load shortcut. So I have Saved a NoSave file over my progress :(

Is there a simple way I can avoid this (other than not being stupid?)

I have no experience or confidence in replacing files, downloading programs etc

Is there just a simple way for a noob like me?
