Problematic parents? Please read this
Hey everyone,
To all the amazing women out there, I want to share something that has really helped me. This post is especially for those who grew up with emotionally unhealthy parents. If your parents have been kind, loving, and supportive, you can probably skip this one.
Both of my parents have struggled in different ways. My mom often criticized me, compared me with others, shamed me, and was verbally abusive. My dad is an alcoholic, a chain smoker, financially unstable, and emotionally unavailable.
Growing up, I didn't receive the warmth, emotional safety, validation, and nurturing that every child deserves. That left its mark on me. At the same time, I don't resent my parents. They did what they knew how to do with the tools they had.
Last week, I came across something called the Ideal Parent Figure Protocol. It's an attachment-based therapy approach developed by psychologists at Harvard Medical School, so it's grounded in psychological research.
The basic idea is surprisingly simple: if you didn't experience healthy parenting growing up, you can intentionally imagine "ideal parents" who consistently meet your emotional needs. These figures can be completely imaginary or inspired by kind, nurturing characters from books, movies, or TV shows. Through guided visualization, you interact with them and allow yourself to experience the care, protection, and acceptance you may have missed as a child.
These ideal parents are meant to provide five essential experiences:
β€οΈ Delight β They are genuinely happy to see you, simply because you exist. Think of how a pet lights up when you walk through the door.
π Attunement β They notice your emotions, understand what you're feeling, and respond with empathy instead of judgment.
π‘οΈ Protection β They make you feel safe, stand up for you when needed, and help you navigate difficult situations.
π€ Support β They encourage you to explore life, make mistakes, grow, and know that they'll be there for you along the way.
π Comfort β When you're hurt, scared, or overwhelmed, they soothe you instead of criticizing or dismissing your feelings.
I've only recently started this, 2 days back. And, I'm feeling so emotionally nourished and loved I can't tell you. Highly recommend it.
