Major issues with Quick Matte - forcing me to add effect frame by frame

Hey everyone hope you’re well. I’m a beginner in after effects and trying to figure out the quick matte tool.

Everytime I click the subject, it only rotos the subject for one frame. I have to manually go one frame along in the composition layer and quick matte the subject again frame by frame.

This isn’t how it’s supposed to work right? I feel like I’m one setting change away from making it automatically roto the whole clip. What am I missing? 💖
