Not All Media Should be for Everyone.
I put it under the "Not That Serious" tag because truly it isn't, but I stand by this statement. Especially when it comes to Fandom Spaces. There are certain pieces of media that just isn't for everyone to enjoy. Some that people want to engage with more in depth and other's that they just want to have fun with. Sometimes both at the same time.
I honestly don't like dealing in Fandom Spaces anymore because it just isn't fun. People take everything sooooo seriously. We can't make "bad media" anymore. A lot of the horribly written fanfics about two characters hooking up that makes no sense what-so-ever was probably made by a kid fucking around. That doesn't mean it deserves to be bashed by pissed off grown adults yelling about cannon. Especially when the source material is normally from a cartoon. This isn't to say adults can't enjoy kids media but holy shit it's not that deep.
We have completely lost the "Don't Like, Don't Engage" mentality. People re-posting poorly drawn art or written fic onto larger platforms to mock and shit on. It's gross. I'm old as shit and when I got into fandom it would be this little platform on Tumblr and Fanfic(.)net. You brows, engage with a few people here and there. Make awful content that people would enjoy just because it was about the characters they like. Nothing was ties to your name, it was all pretty anonymous and if it ever broke out of the fandom space it was heavily scrutinized (Think My Immortal if anyone remembers THAT whole thing).
Now people are posting their Ao3's on main accounts and everyone has something to say about a ship or shipping culture.
I don't care.
Truly and honestly.
"Oh but they act like this ship should be cannon!!!" Okay, who cares. Don't engage with those people. The fucking Supernatural Fandom was awful about it back in the day and yeah everyone thought they were annoying but it never effected anyone like people allow it to now. I just want people to enjoy the media in whatever way they want to without being worried about it going on blast. If this is an issue for other's then maybe they should not be in these spaces. Simple as that. Not everything is for you, not every fandom is for you. That's FINE. It should be completely FINE.
But we live in an age of algorithms not allowing us to be uncomfortable with media. With ragebiat being so easily manufactured that it's hard to let these cringey growing pains of creation play out for artists and writers alike. Enjoy what you want but for the love of god stop putting other people down.
