The Spirit of the Law
Greetings dear reader,
Just what is the Spirit of the Law? Does the Spirit of the Law mean you should no longer obey God’s law – his Ten Commandments? Millions of professing Christians seem to think so.
In a scripture that is applicable to all of us today- Jesus spoke to his true servants – the disciples -saying: “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, … I am not come to DESTROY, but to FULFILL” (Matt. 5:17). So, here Jesus said we are NOT to THINK He came to abolish the Law of God but to fulfill – and Romans 13:8 says, “…he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.” So, we see love fulfills the law of God. But does FULFILL mean we no longer keep the Ten Commandments?
If you take note of Romans 13:9, Paul went on to show how we fulfill the law; he said: “For this, thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness, thou shalt not covet. … Thou shalt love your neighbor as yourself.” So, here it is plainly revealed that we FULFILL God’s law by keeping the Ten Commandments – OBEYING God’s law. This scripture alone is UNDENIABLE proof the Law of God has truly not been abolished; and how could it be abolished – after all, did not Jesus say He did not come to abolish the LAW? And if a person COVET then that person is breaking the tenth commandment that FORBIDS COVETING. Can you see that? Do you believe a person can lie, steal, an covet without breaking the ten commandments; if you do, then you are deceiving yourself.
Now if you go to James 2:8, it says: “If ye fulfill the royal law (the Ten commandments) according to the scriptures, thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well.” But NOTICE what James goes on to say in verse 10 and verse 11: “For whosoever shall keep the whole law (meaning all of the ten Commandments), and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said, do not commit adultery, said also, do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.” How CLEAR it is that if a man keeps the whole law of God but offend in one point that person is guilty of breaking all of the Ten Commandments - as that person then becomes a transgressor – a sinner- a Lawbreaker – for “Sin is the transgression of the law” (1 John 3:4). When you see this truth of the Bible, then you should be able to see that is absolutely wrong for men to break any of God’s law – which include replacing God’s HOLY sabbath day -with Sunday - as failure to keep that commandment to keep the Sabbath holy is also SIN.
Romans 5:5 say, “… love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the holy Spirit which is given unto us.” God has to give the TRUE Christian his holy Spirit to obey the Spiritual intent of the Law. Why? Because the Law of God is Spiritual Law – so says Romans 7:14.
Satan is the Opposer to God’s Truth
In bringing this to a conclusion, let me make the very IMPORTANT point that Satan is a master deceiver who works in ways that cunningly deceive people to believe the opposite of God’s truth – just as he did with Mother Eve; Remember God told Eve she would die if she disobeyed, but the cunning Satan came along and told her the opposite of the truth; he told her she would not die and she believed Satan’s lie. Today, millions have been deceived into believing the OPPOSITE of God’s truth and do not even realize it. For example, some say God’s law is a burden or see it as being too restrictive, but contrary to that false belief, the bible calls God’s law the “LAW of LIBERTY” (James 1:25). They also seem to make it appear the law of God is so bad it has to be done away – while ignoring the fact that the bible says, “… the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good” (Romans 7:12).
Also consider that Jesus said: "whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments and teach men so shall be called the least in the kingdom of Heaven but whosoever shall do and teach them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 5:19). Well, today, those who do not believing in keeping God’s commandment will just REVERSE the truth of what Christ said – by believing the opposite of the truth - as they seem think you are going to be the least in the kingdom of God or is wrong for believing God’s law is still in force today. So, here you see a few examples of how the cunning Satan has deceived people to have an opposite view of God’s truth; and people are just unsuspecting – not realizing that Satan is the great originator and influencer behind these opposing thoughts on God’s law.
And by the way, let me also say that the person who breaks God’s law and teach others to do so is not even going to be in the kingdom of God unless such person repent of doing so -as no one who breaks God’s law is going to enter God’s kingdom without have been led to see they are wrong in what they believe and then repent of it. And in speaking of repentance let me say that as an old man, I have found that there are two things in life that is very hard for people to admit: number 1 – is to admit to being wrong when shown the truth and number 2 is to actually believe what God says; people are just reluctant to change and say they have been wrong-as doing so is hard for them - especially when it requires going against what their church teaches or what they grew up being taught from childhood, but if we are to serve God in Spirit and in truth, then we have to be willing to place obedience to God first and foremost above everything else.
