Can obsessively biting my lips and inner cheeks cause cancer?
23F
Every single day, for at least 2 hours, I am chewing my cheeks and lips to even out the skin. I am now at the point where my cheeks and lips start peeling on their own and after my first meal it gets agitated and then I can not help but chew it until it stops bothering me. This has been going on for about 7 years now.
I've tried sls free toothpastes but it doesn't seem to help. Might be that the skin is already too damaged or that it has become a habit.
Sometimes I hold off on chewing for 2 days (never gotten farther than that) but all the loose skin makes it so hard for me to concentrate on anything that I'm forced to just sit and chew until it's evened out (2-3 hours).
Apples have always made the skin on my lips white and loose since I was a kid but now most meals do the same. I've considered it might be some kind of an allergy but the habit is so ingrained that I have no clue how to go about fixing anything.
As for my lips, if i vigorously exfoliate them twice a day, they remain smooth and I can hold off. But if I don't exfoliate or chew them for a few days they get very stiff and slightly scaly and I have to peel if off to get it soft. No amount of moisturising helps and I've tried maybe 30 different kinds. It is not exfoliative cheilitis before someone suggests this, it looks different.
I have keratosis pilaris on my arms and cheeks which is a keratin buildup. Could this have something to do with it?
I don't have any pictures but I can try to not chew and take pics of how it looks if that would be helpful.
I've never shown a doctor because I'm embarrassed.
Is this going to end up causing some kind of cancer of the mouth?
