**Introduction**

Many PC games offer excellent localization, translating menus, subtitles, and user interfaces into dozens of languages. However, one aspect of localization is frequently overlooked: **proper support for non-US keyboard layouts**.

A recurring issue affecting multiple games is the incorrect handling of the **AltGr** key in text input fields. While this problem is especially visible for Polish players, it is **not limited to Poland.** Users of German, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian, Croatian, Slovenian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Belgian, Dutch, Turkish, and many other European keyboard layouts rely on AltGr to type everyday characters.

When implemented incorrectly, **AltGr** may be interpreted as a regular **Ctrl** key, causing standard editing shortcuts such as **Ctrl+A** to trigger while the user is simply trying to type **A** character.

The result ranges from accidentally selecting all text to completely replacing an entire chat message with a single letter **A**.

**What is AltGr?**

On Windows, **AltGr (Right Alt)** is not a unique modifier key internally.

Instead, Windows generates it as the combination:

*  Left Ctrl
*  Right Alt

This behavior is intentional and has existed for decades to maintain compatibility with keyboard layouts that require additional characters.

Applications should therefore distinguish between:

*  an actual **Ctrl** shortcut,
* and **AltGr**, which is being used for text input.

Failure to do so results in numerous input bugs.

**The Polish Example**

On the Polish Programmer keyboard layout, national characters are entered using AltGr:

* AltGr + A → ą
* AltGr + C → ć
* AltGr + E → ę
* AltGr + L → ł
* AltGr + N → ń
* AltGr + O → ó
* AltGr + S → ś
* AltGr + X → ź
* AltGr + Z → ż

Typing these letters is part of normal conversation. A Polish player cannot reasonably avoid using them.

If the application mistakenly considers Ctrl to still be pressed, the next key **A** press becomes:

**Ctrl + A + A**

which performs Select All, and print **A**.

Immediately afterward, the typed letter replaces the selected text.

A message that took thirty seconds to write can instantly become:

\> **a**

without the player intentionally using any shortcut.

**This Is Not a Polish-Only Problem**

Although Polish users often notice the issue first because of the frequency of the letter "ą", the underlying bug affects many European keyboard layouts.

For example:

* German uses **AltGr** for **ä**, **ö**, **ü**, and **ß**.
* Czech and Slovak use **AltGr** for several national characters and symbols.
* Portuguese and Spanish layouts rely heavily on **AltGr** for punctuation and special characters.
* French, Belgian, Dutch, Croatian, Slovenian, Romanian, Hungarian, Turkish, and others also depend on **AltGr** for everyday typing.

The exact character combinations differ between layouts, but the root cause is identical:

**the application incorrectly interprets AltGr as a normal Ctrl modifier instead of part of text input.**

**What Actually Happens?**

Using keyboard logging tools and Windows console applications, the behavior can be observed directly.

When the Right Alt key is pressed on the Polish keyboard layout, Windows reports:

* L-CTRL pressed
* R-ALT pressed

This is expected.

When **AltGr** is released correctly, both modifier states should also be released.

A properly implemented text field never exposes this behavior to the user because it processes the resulting Unicode character instead of treating the modifiers as editing shortcuts.

The issue arises when a game's input layer fails to synchronize the modifier states correctly.

**Recorded Input Logs**

The following log was captured while reproducing the issue:

\[05:01:59.957\] Key pressed: A-KEY

\[05:02:01.917\] Key pressed: A-KEY

\[05:02:03.298\] Key pressed: L-CTRL

\[05:02:03.300\] Key pressed: R-ALT

\[05:02:03.982\] Key pressed: A-KEY

\[05:02:49.388\] Key pressed: A-KEY

\[05:02:49.651\] Key pressed: A-KEY

\[05:02:49.868\] Key pressed: A-KEY

Notice that pressing **Right Alt** automatically generates **Left Ctrl** immediately beforehand.

This behavior is entirely normal and originates from Windows.

The problem is not the operating system, it is how the game processes those events afterward.

Also note the impossible human reaction time for the Ctrl and Alt keys.

**Observing the Same Behavior in the Windows Command Prompt**

The issue can also be demonstrated outside the game using simple keyboard event logging.

When monitoring key presses in the Windows Command Prompt or another low-level keyboard event viewer, pressing **AltGr** on a Polish keyboard produces a sequence similar to:

Key Down : Left Ctrl

Key Down : Right Alt

When the key is released:

Key Up : Right Alt

Key Up : Left Ctrl

This confirms that Windows itself exposes **AltGr** as the combination of Left Ctrl and Right Alt.

Applications should therefore never assume that every Ctrl event represents an intentional Ctrl shortcut.

Instead, they must correctly recognize **AltGr** as a text input modifier.

**The Actual Bug**

In affected games, the internal input system occasionally fails to process the **Ctrl Key-Up** event correctly.

As a consequence, Ctrl remains logically active even though the physical key is no longer pressed.

The next letter typed is therefore interpreted as a keyboard shortcut instead of ordinary text.

For example:

**AltGr + A**

becomes internally:

Ctrl still active

A pressed

which is interpreted as:

**Ctrl + A + A**

The entire chat message becomes selected.

Immediately afterward, the letter **"a"** replaces the selection.

From the player's perspective, their entire message disappears.

**Independent of Hardware**

The issue has been reproduced:

* on multiple computers,
* with different keyboards,
* by multiple players,
* using independent Windows installations.

One additional player reproduced the exact same behavior using the same Polish keyboard layout.

This strongly indicates that the issue is **systemic within the game's input handling**, rather than being caused by defective hardware.

Similar Issues Have Appeared in Other Games

Historically, similar AltGr-related bugs have also appeared in games such as World of Warcraft and Roblox.

Those cases were likewise traced to incorrect handling of **AltGr** and modifier key states rather than to any fault in Windows or the keyboard layout itself.

This demonstrates that the problem is a well-known pitfall in custom game input systems.

Recommendations for Developers

Whenever a text input field is focused, the application should:

* process text using character or Unicode input events rather than raw key combinations whenever possible;
* correctly distinguish **AltGr** from genuine Ctrl shortcuts;
* ensure modifier key states are always synchronized after Key-Up events;
* avoid executing editing shortcuts while the user is entering text;
* test input using multiple European keyboard layouts instead of only the US layout.

Testing should include at least Polish, German, French, Spanish, Czech, Slovak, and other **AltGr**\-dependent layouts.

**Conclusion**

This is not a language-specific inconvenience but a broader compatibility issue affecting millions of European users.

Windows intentionally represents **AltGr** as **Left Ctrl + Right Alt**, and software must account for that behavior. If an application's input system occasionally leaves Ctrl in an active state, the result is unintended editing shortcuts such as **Ctrl+A**, leading to complete loss of chat messages.

Although Polish players encounter the issue most visibly when typing **"ą"**, the underlying flaw affects many European keyboard layouts that rely on **AltGr** for everyday text input. Proper handling of modifier states and character input is therefore essential for any game that includes chat or other editable text fields.
