How can you steer clear of a woman like Siya? What steps can you take to ensure that someone is truly interested in an arranged marriage?
I'm currently in the arranged marriage process, and something that's been eating away at me lately has got to do with the whole Siya case.
Im not talking about settling down after a single meeting. I've actually been thinking of spending a bit of quality time with the person, maybe a couple of months - that's if I get a good feel for whether we'd make a compatible couple. On the flip side, if I sense that she's not the right fit for me, or worse, if I feel like she's just not that into me, then I'd just have to pull the plug on it.
Being in a few relationships before, I'm not completely clueless when it comes to getting to know someone new. But the thing that's got me worried is this:
When I scrolled through those Instagram posts that had some of the details of the Siya case, it looked like this happy couple to me. They were smiling together, cuddling up, and nothing in those videos suggested that she wasn't keen on getting married or was being forced into it. I know that social media isn't exactly real life. But what if someone never actually says they're not into it, how's the other person supposed to know?
I'm definitely not saying that every person who keeps their cards close to their chest is a bad egg. That's just not the point Im trying to make. What Im worried about is a lot more common: someone agreeing to get married because of family pressure, but never actually telling the groom-to-be the truth - that they dont actually want that life. Even if it's not a matter for the law enforcement, that's still a marriage built on false expectations - and most likely both parties will end up unhappy.
So my question is:
- How can a man tell when a woman is genuinely keen on getting married, or if she's just going along with it because of what mum and dad expect?
- Are there any signs that someone is a bit uncomfortable but is too scared to say so?
- Is there anything a prospective groom can do to create an atmosphere where she feels safe enough to just say "I dont think I'm the right fit" without feeling like she's letting anyone down or that they'd think she's a flake?
I get that there are no guarantees and that any relationship is just a bit of a gamble. But if someone acts super warm and affectionate but is really not keen on the marriage at all, then the other person's got a real problem on their hands.
For context, I'm not from one of the big city kind of places. For my age and where I live, it's actually pretty common that if you're going to get married, it's still gonna be an arranged thing. So Im thinking, in a way - arranged marriages are still the most practical option for many people.
Id especially love to hear back from women who've actually gone through the arranged marriage thing or seen friends or family go through it. Id really like to get a better sense of what you think about all this.
