Crochet Appliqué Sweater—Can I use a store bought sweater?

Hello all,

I am a very busy mom of 2 that works full time. I enjoy crocheting, but I find it hard to commit to a large project because of the time it takes!

I love the idea of crochet appliqué’s, and would love to customize a sweater. I am wondering if it be a good idea to make the appliqués myself and then attach it to a store bought sweater. I would like to thrift some sweaters and customize them myself.

Should the material of the sweater match the material of the yarn (eg polyester for both, wool blend for both, etc)?

Should I run the appliqué’s through the wash before attaching to the sweater?

Is blocking appliqué’s necessary?

How should I attach the appliqué’s to the sweater, especially if the appliqué is a worsted yarn, and the sweater is a finer knit? Should I consider using a DK yarn instead?
