Am I crazy to join the navy at 35?
Anyone join the military as a nurse later in life?
I’m 35, have worked in healthcare my entire adult life, and I’m currently in nursing leadership. Lately I’ve been seriously looking into the Navy (or possibly another branch) as a nurse officer. I have a doctorate degree and currently work as a dean. I’m also a family nurse practitioner.
This isn’t really about wanting to leave nursing or being unhappy where I am. It’s more that I’ve always been drawn to serving, and I think the leadership experience, structure, and opportunities would make me a stronger leader in the long run.
I’d love to hear from anyone who commissioned in their 30s (or even later). What was the adjustment like? Did your civilian nursing experience actually help, or did you feel like you were starting over? How was the officer culture, deployments, and overall quality of life? Any regrets?
I’d especially love to hear from nurses who went in as officers, but honestly any advice or stories are welcome. Just trying to get a realistic picture beyond what the recruiters tell you.
Thanks!
