Roxas' prologue is so sad

KH2

"You're lucky Sora...looks like my summer vacation is over..."

The ending of Roxas' prologue gave me such a melancholy feeling, it really sets the tone for the rest of the game so beautifully. Those final moments as Roxas discovers the truth and fights Axel, seeing Donald, Goofy and Sora sleeping in the pods, it feels like we are witnessing his final moments, saying goodbye to the life he could have had because he has no choice but to embrace his fate. He was fighting so hard to stop this from happening and yet he still made the ultimate sacrifice. That melancholic feeling struck me pretty hard in those moments and when Sora comes back, even though it is good to see him again. It just hurts to know that Roxas is no longer here because he sacrificed his life so Sora could wake up, so he could become whole. The prologue is counting down the days until the end of summer vacation and you get to spend time with Roxas, just doing mundane things with his friends like doing jobs, having sea salt ice cream atop the clock tower, going on the train etc, you begin to care about this character but it is slowly counting down to his last days. He got to be a normal kid experiencing ordinary, human things only to have that time stripped away from him, to become a part of someone he can never truly understand but he knows it's for the greater good.

Roxas was only born to be a nobody, to give up his existence so he could become another half. Nothing about his life was real, merely just a fabrication designed by DiZ to trap him. Nobodies aren't supposed to exist but that doesn't mean they aren't incapable of feeling emotion or developing hearts.

When you leave Twilight Town, you are filled with sadness because Sora feels all of the pain Roxas is feeling about saying goodbye to his friends, who don't even remember him at this point and yet they still feel that connection. Sora is crying Roxas' tears because he is feeling all of the pain and sadness Roxas feels in his heart of having his short life be cut so soon. It's truly such a beautiful scene and it shows us just how much Roxas' presence is still within Sora and will continue to haunt the narrative for the rest of the game.

P.S, I will miss you Roxas and your badass skateboard. I had so much fun riding on that thing. I don't think I will ever get over what happened to him :(
