Affinity Spaces for Social Democracy
One of the primary impediments to class consciousness is that so many spaces for people to gather and collect involve the shared profit motivation. Incubators turn wealthy individuals into titans of industry (actually more normally just take their money, energy and time but in the ideal sense). Workplaces, where adults spend most of their productive time, rarely if ever feature time to connect over shared needs. The only needs forwarded are that of the employer to make more money off of a individual's time, usually to give back time and energy to corporate overlords to...then come up with more ways to push time and energy burdens onto workers but collect the benefits all themselves.
To craft affinity spaces that create class conciousness, there must be easily accesible spaces in which working people are already gathered. One concept I had was trading card games. Another could be an alternative bazaar--a mall for resistance to working class money loss up the chain of capitalist devastation.
It is clear that the internet was never made to be an affinity space for class consciousness and that our social betters are working overtime to make sure it never can be. School involves really a fourth space after work, home and incidental consumption (food, coffee, gasoline, etc.) and looks ultimately to be the province of those with money.
It is clear that class literacy must extend beyond echo chambers of people with time on their hands but, for some reason, no patience. Considering the Fourth of July, I've been reflecting on how simple membership in patriotism is. You espouse some basic fealty to a country. You stand when a song is played. You are patriotic. Then consider membership in social democracy circles. Did you read the whole of Das Capital, both volumes?
