Had this thought while thinking about the Doctor's laissez-faire humour surrounding death
Alla: You can't make jokes! People are dying!
The Doctor: Love, all the Galvani people, a civilization spanning eons, were instantly wiped from seventeen star systems in the flash of a gamma rayve. Poof. Atoms. Byeeee. A friend of mine, mate about a billion years old, I watched every hour of his life roll back til he was a puddle on the ground. That I then slipped on. In the matter of a minute. I've lost so many people so fast and without warning or care or cause or concern, your heart would wobble at innumerablity.
Death doesn't deal, love. We can either laugh with her or die on her stage. Yet hey, at least she has a sense of humor.
Alla: A bit deadpan for my taste.
(Articulated as dialogue because I wasn't sure how best to convey this thought in-universe)
