The truth about secular music.

CW: Sensitive Topic

This will not be a smooth read as I literally just thought about this but I really need to get it off my chest so bear with me.

I’d really like to talk about this because I see it get thrown around a lot. I really think that we have it a bit twisted when it comes to secular music. What we should be worried about is actually carnal music which is different from secular.

Secular music is described as music intended for general life or non religious audiences while carnal music refers to worldly music that ACTIVELY promotes fleshly desires and vices contrary to biblical teaching and doctrine.

Secular music is not inherently bad. I’ll give a silly but effective example. The Happy birthday song. This is an example of a secular song. So are we saying we shouldn’t sing the happy birthday to our loved ones because the song is secular? Lol. I think the discardment of secular music as a whole has no real benefit.

There are so many secular things we do actually, so why is it that music is singled out? What about the secular shows and movies? Oh you You watch sports? That’s secular too!

Now thread carefully. I still believe we should be listening to Christian artists and music and honestly if that’s all you want to do that is a bonus. I listen to worship music like 99% of the time. Then sometimes I’ll listen to a nice song probably from my childhood that probably talks about living life with friends or family or something like that - you get the gist. That’s it.

Carnal music and artists are a no obviously. For me, anything that talks Sex, drugs, money or anything of that kind will not get any attention from me. This is the real danger. Carnal music. I don’t think I need to go deeper there. We know the artists and we know the music they make. You will know when you shouldn’t be listening to a song.

It’s a very big topic and I feel like a lot of “baby” Christians struggle here because of the way we have made it to be.
