any chance we can do a demographics survey?
seeing the nzf thread about citizenship being a prerequisite for voting rights - without taking a side in this thread, seems to indicate that the majority in this sub think its a really bad idea.
whilst i struggle to understand how this could not be a benefit to /New Zealanders, Its starting to make me wonder if im not as left as i thought i was.
I've always voted labour, and greeen, because as a 6th generation NZer i have no obligations or connections to anything except NZ, and i vote in what I believe to be the best interests of New Zealand as a whole, her people, and her future.
seeing the wave of anger at the above suggestion that to me seems patently obvious (my views go further than nz first on this :
want to own land, want to vote? commit to nz, be a nz citizen.
and yet, so many people are suddenly offering these arguments that seem like this would "ruin" new zealand?
arguments like
- i should get visa free travel
- ive never had to be a citizen before so why should i now
- this is voter suppression!!!!
- this is racist!!!!
etc, etc.
I dont know, maby im stupid, but i find it really, really hard to reconcile why most people in this sub in particular feel this way, when from my perspective, the most "left" thing to do, is to support people born in this country, and commited to this country, by ensuring that only those with genuine adn demonstrable permanent commitment to here shoudl have a say.
look, clearly im buying into winnies intent here, to stir shit... but its starting to make me question what "left" values are.
are you all globalists?
do you not respect national sovereignty and the right to act in the interest of your nations people?
or is this more a case of "this personally effects me personally, so despite being a 'left' voter im going to argue in my own personal self interest, rather than the wider collective interest.
as an aside:
if we made it so only citizens could own land, then corporations would be forbidden from owning land. i think that would be a massive, egalitarian win for nz.
anyway - if interested in participating:
position : for / against
nz citizen: y/n
self assessed political bias: right / center / left
