[F4A] an early celebration

This match wasn’t even supposed to be my responsibility.

I teach History, I am far more comfortable discussing militairy tactics than sport tactics, although it can come in handy. But when the coach called in sick, I was forced to step in, not just the gym class but the after school basketball match as well. I told myself it was just supervision. Keep them organized. Make sure no one gets hurt, they are gonna be champions anyway, just keep them from getting injured, but to my own surprise they won and would be champions if not for the small theoretical change that they lose all matched from now and the second team wins all.

The final buzzer echoed through the gym, and for a moment there was silence before the boys looked at me like I’d had something to do with it. They were laughing, shouting, clapping each other on the back as the other school packed up and left, less happy off course. Parents left not long after while the boys got ready to celebrate.

I stayed behind to clean up. Rolled the ball cart back into storage. Switched off the scoreboard, and even picked up the forgotten litter

The gym was almost silent now,

Almost apart from the sounds out of the locker room. The drums of celebration still rang there. Loud voices. Laughter, shouts of triump, in their minds they were champion already. They clearly hadn’t finished riding their victory high.

I found myself smiling slightly as I walked toward the door. They deserved to celebrate after all but, they had to do that at home not here.

The door was closed.

The celebration was still hearable behind it.

And for some reason, I hesitated before opening...
