Senior in college with a background in tech, but not sure how to get into consulting

Findapath-Job Choice/Clarity

I'm a senior in college who is planning on graduating in the Autumn quarter of 2026. My major is Informatics and Data Science, and I've held two internships as a business analyst; one at my university's hospital and the other at a F500 fintech company. In my current fintech internship, it's a lot of working on internal processes and sometimes it feels kind of useless since I work in the Project Management Office, and with the surge of AI and rumors of my department getting laid off, it has made me reconsider my future plans.

I've always had an interest in economics (and finance), but pursued tech because it seemed like the safe option. If I push my graduation to Spring 2027, I can fit a B.A in Economics during my senior year. Unfortunately, I can't do the same for finance. The tuition isn't an issue for me since it is relatively cheap and I can fund it out of pocket.

However, I'm not sure if this is a good idea. If I get a return offer at my current internship, I'm sure I can push it to August 2027, but the department I would be working in wouldn't be something I'm interested in. I would have to ask my recruiter and see if I can pivot into their consulting department, but I'm not sure if that is even feasible.

Another alternative I have considered is keeping my graduation date as is (Autumn 2026), and just self-study for consulting and case interview prep, but I'd mostly have a tech background.

Any advice, opinions, or thoughts are appreciated!
