Just cut off my (toxic?) friends after years
Hey guys, I think it's all feeling a little intense and I just really need to vent and would love to hear what you think and whether I made the right decision. It's a lot, I'll try to be concise.
My bf and I became friends with this other couple, who was my bf's best friend, around 4 years ago. In the beginning it was fine. Then later on I realized those two barely showed any interest towards me, and that has kept repeating even though I talked to them about this two times, saying how I truly felt and they didn't change after that at all. Then a couple instances happened that sat so wrong with me:
-
the guy friend often would joke about my bf, but like, toeing the line between a sort of criticism and joking, you know? saying my bf likes to take pics of himself (when he rarely does, seriously), and my bf was like "why do you say that?" and he was like "well if i were you i would, you're like a pretty boy". or making jokes about my bf's weight, penis size, hygiene, whatever.
-
we went on several vacations as a group, once with another couple (so 3 couples total). the guy took a crazy liking to the new guy of the couple, COMPLETELY dropping my bf for the whole week, going off with this guy and in complete disregard of the group. they would just go off swimming together constantly, and they didn't pay any attention to my bf. He felt left out. At the end of the vacation I was SO done with it, I got angry at the guy and said "how can you treat your best friend like this?" The whole group switched up on me just because I was being direct and truthful about what was happening. I only got feedback about my "tone" (I wasn't even that angry, it's just that I'm always pretty chill usually)
-
on another vacation, there was this fight about playing music in the evening, and the guy gave my boyfriend the silent treatment all the way on the way home, driving for 8 hours, just horrible and childish
-
when we went to a festival, they didn't accomodate us at all, just whining about the artists THEY wanted to see, not even joining us for the stuff we liked, just no regards to us at all and complaining that we didn't join THEM.
-
just weird little things, like keeping the score too much on money, taking too much from what we'd give, them getting into couple fights/discussions while we were there too, always having to have their ways with many things even as simple as the guy friend always wanting to sit in the front of the car, just many small things that I used to shrug off but now looking back, its stupid and vapid.
These are the worst ones I can remember right now but next to these it's also the complete lack of interest, especially towards me because I don't want to play their game. I always felt like I wasn't "cool" enough to them, and would think it was something I did, that I had to be more open and try harder, but they're just too self-involved it seems like.
But I would always walk away feeling confused, less than, unappreciated, sad, drained, tired, dismissed, unseen, while they thought everything was always good and great.
Even now, my boyfriend called the guy and said he couldn't do it anymore. He didn't want to go deep into why and everything, which is better, because these kind of people seem to find a way to always spin the narrative. Now the couple both send a message in our shared group chat and left afterwards, acting as if it was "THEIR decision to leave", as if they're reframing the whole thing, saying they "find it a shame it has to be this way" not even realizing or reflecting on what maybe made us feel this way? As if this was not a consequence of their actions? As if they're being graceful about an unfortunate situation. It makes my blood lowkey boil, like them also saying "we're always open for a conversation", there's like 0 effort taken here by them. No acknowledgement of the issues, no responsibility taken, just spinning it all again into their own stupid stories. Really done with it. Maybe I'm overreacting, but it's just so stupid.
Here's to better friends.
