[M4F] A Sweet Southern Belle

In a line of work where one travels a lot, the importance of a good, working car is paramount. Keep up with oil checks, regular maintenance, keep the car clean inside so you don’t mind being in it for long periods. All those little things everyone always tried to tell us as teenagers that we ignored until we realized just how much damn time we spend inside of our cars. Thankfully, for work, I get a lease to drive.

Unthankfully, that lease has just broken down on the side of a two lane highway in the south of Georgia.

With rain coming down, I stand with the hood popped attempting to isolate the issue to figure out if maybe I can do something to limp the car into the next town. The engine in front of me is a smoking, scalding hot mess. I’m legitimately concerned that I’ve blown a cylinder and the car is dead for good. I’m maybe 5 miles from the little Air BnB I rented for the next few days. If I can make the walk, I can call a tow in the morning. So I drop the hood, lock the car up, and talk off walking with the poncho from my roadside emergency kit keeping me kinda shielded from the downpour.

There’s lights in the distance, over the hills. Maybe I can find an uber to bring me back for my luggage. At any rate, I’m gonna need a hot shower to combat the cold I’m sure to get after being out in this weather. Just as I start up the first hill, maybe 100 yards from where I left the car, headlights behind me have me stopping to turn. I throw a hand up, hoping the drive of the vehicle will stop.
