Daniels Meter Long Nose!
-
Ibn Abi Shaybah, Musannaf - T. al-Shithri, 19/61-62
30682 - ‘Affan narrated to us, saying: Hammam narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Zurarah ibn Awfa, from Mutarrif ibn Malik, that he said: I witnessed the conquest of Tustar with al-Ash'ari. He said: We found Daniel in al-Sus. He said: The people of al-Sus, when they suffered from famine, would bring him out and pray for rain through him. We found with him sixty sealed jars. He said: We opened a jar from the nearest, a jar from the middle, and a jar from the furthest, and we found ten thousand in each jar. Hammam said: I do not think he said anything other than ten thousand. We found with him two wraps of linen, and we found with him a box containing a book. The first man to come upon him was a man from Banu 'Anbar called Hurqus. He said: Al-Ash'ari gave him the two wraps and gave him two hundred dirhams. He said: Later, he requested the two wraps back from him, but he refused to return them and tore them into turbans among his companions.
He said: We had with us a Christian hireling named Nu'aym, who said: "Sell me this box and what is inside it." They said: "If it contains neither gold nor silver nor the Book of Allah." He said: "Indeed, what is inside it is the Book of Allah." They disliked selling him the book, so we sold him the box for two dirhams and gifted him the book. [3]

36084 - Shādhan narrated to us, saying: Hammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Abū ‘Imrān al-Jūnī, from Anas, that when they conquered Tustar, he said: "We found a man in a coffin whose nose was a cubit long. They used to seek his help for victory and rain." Abū Mūsā wrote to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb regarding this, and ‘Umar wrote back: "This is one of the prophets, and the fire does not consume the prophets, and the earth does not consume the prophets." He wrote to him, "You and one of your companions—meaning one of the companions of Abū Mūsā—should go and bury him in a place that no one else knows besides the two of you." He said: "So, Abū Mūsā and I went and buried him." [9]
[9] Sahih
The narration uses the word ذراع, which refers to a cubit or the length from your elbow to the tip of your middle finger. It is around 50 cm, or half a meter.
Anas says that the body of Daniel they found had a nose 50 centimeter long. A normal human's face is around 18cm long. Even if we were to suppose a cubit isnt an exact length here, it is still supposed to signify something long enought to be termed a cubit. So we reach two scenarios:
- Either Daniel was a normally sized man but with a nose extending from his face to his waist for no fucking reason.
or
- This is support for the notion that "people back then" used to be much, much taller, and got smaller with time (in height from 60 cubits to the normal height today). Thus since Daniel was bigger than average, he had a proportional nose for his height. This is ofcourse wrong scientifically, but does fit Islam Theology (cf. Adam Was 60 Cubits Tall )

Ibn Ishaq narrated from Abu Khaldah Khalid bin Dinar, who said: Abu al-Aliyah narrated to us, saying: "When we conquered Tuster, we found in the treasury of Hurmuzan a bier upon which was a dead man, and at his head was a scripture belonging to him. So we took the scripture and carried it to Umar bin al-Khattab. He summoned Ka'b for it, and he translated [copied] it into Arabic. Thus, I was the first man among the Arabs who read it; I read it just as I read this Quran." I said to Abu al-Aliyah: "What was in it?" He said: "Your history, your affairs, the nuances of your speech, and what is to exist hereafter." I said: "So what did you do with the man?" He said: "We dug thirteen scattered graves during the daytime, and when night came, we buried him and leveled all the graves, in order to obscure it from the people so they would not exhume him." I said: "And what did they hope from him?" He said: "Whenever the sky withheld [rain] from them, they would go out into the open with his bier, and they would receive rain." I said: "Who did you think the man was?" He said: "A man called Daniel..." [1]. This narration is firmly established on the authority of Abu al-Aliyah [2], Rufay' bin Mihran ar-Riyahi, the great Successor (Tabi'i), who was present during the event; thus, this action by the Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—is authenticated. Ibn Kathir said: "And this chain of transmission is authentic (sahih) up to Abu al-Aliyah" [3]. It has also been reported in another narration that the one who commanded them to conceal his grave was Umar bin al-Khattab—may Allah be pleased with him. Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated with his chain of transmission from Anas: "That when they conquered Tuster, he said: He found a man whose nose was a cubit long in the coffin. They used to seek assistance and seek rain through him. So Abu Musa wrote to Umar bin al-Khattab concerning that. Umar wrote back stating: 'This is a prophet among the prophets; the fire does not consume the prophets, and the earth does not consume the prophets.' He wrote further: 'Look, you and your companions—meaning the companions of Abu Musa—and bury him in a place that no one knows except you two.' He said: 'So I and Abu Musa went and buried him'" [4]. The narrators of this chain of transmission are trustworthy (thiqat). Ibn Kathir stated: "And from Anas bin Malik with a good (jayyid) chain of transmission..." then he mentioned a segment of it; Al-Bidayah wa-n-Nihayah: 2/38.
