Back in school in Kathmandu, Pemba already had long hair and a striking, unconventional look. Older students noticed this and invited him to join their rock band—as a backing vocalist. He didn't have to do much: just stand on stage and sing along occasionally. They rehearsed in an old garage for months, and when the time came to perform, the band transformed into true rockers: oversized leather jackets, ripped jeans, and pendants featuring skulls and chains...

When his father saw Pemba in this outfit, he became furious, telling him that a skull is not an accessory but a sacred symbol. Wearing such things for fun meant mocking what was holy. He made Pemba take it all off right there, in front of the other guys. Pemba complied, but he didn't speak to his father for months. He soon left the band as well.
