Quality vs. Quantity: What's Your Collecting Philosophy

Discussion

I'm curious how other collectors approach this.

Do you focus more on the size of your collection, or on the quality and personal value of what's actually on your shelves?

For me, collecting vinyl can easily become a rabbit hole. It's so tempting to buy everything you come across, especially when you regularly visit thrift stores, record fairs, or find good deals online. Before you know it, you've accumulated far more records than you realistically have time to listen to.

Because space is limited, I often make a conscious choice between buying an album on CD or on vinyl. If it's something I mainly want for the music, I'll sometimes choose the CD simply because it takes up much less room. Vinyl is reserved for albums that feel special enough to justify the space they occupy.

That said, I still catch myself making impulse purchases. Sometimes I buy a record simply because I find it, because it's rare, or because I convince myself that I "should" own it. Then, a year later, I realize it has only been on my turntable once or maybe not at all. Those moments make me question whether I'm collecting music or simply collecting objects.

Have any of you experienced the same thing? Do you regularly thin out your collection, or are you comfortable keeping records even if you rarely play them? Has your collecting philosophy changed over the years?

I'd be interested to hear how others balance the enjoyment of collecting with actually listening to their records.
