Classroom Currency/Incentives
I seen a post on here talking about incentives in class, and it reminded me of how this is such a huge debate at my school every year. We have 3 teachers who use classroom money for incentives. They also take money away for bad behavior, late work, not taking enough AR tests (That’s a massive stretch for me). They claim it’s the best classroom management, and that every teacher should be doing it. However, we’ve also gotten complaints from our upper elementary and middle school about how when students come to them, they expect an incentive for every little expected behavior (they say the kids reference these 3 teachers) and that this practice is hurting kids in the long run. I’m torn here as I can see both sides. I’ve never used an incentive system, but I have been considering incorporating some sort of classroom wide incentive jar, maybe to promote random acts of kindness or something similar. Our admin has also mentioned us trying to use classroom money to encourage kids to read and take more AR tests (those 3 teachers have the highest AR points every year), but I am not a fan of this at all. I’d love to hear other perspectives on this!
