Chastity cage "progression"
I think we all start with the Chinese commodity cages. Some of us get lucky and find a comfortable cage there after a few tries spending in the neighborhood of $60 to find Goldielox. A lot of people decide to move on from there regardless of fit and comfort — they just want something nicer. So, people will upgrade. Perhaps it's a Cherry Keeper or an authentic KINK3D Cobra.
Eventually, either because size requires it or because of its cachet, some continue on to custom. Perhaps it's a reasonably affordable 3D printed device like RoosterCage offers or maybe it's a hand-made steel device from Mature Metal or Badass Workroom.
But some, perhaps after getting that $500 custom cage or after that $30 Amazon cage decide to start designing their own. Maybe they do CAD for a living, maybe they learned it in college, or maybe they learned it so they could make sizing tubes for an Evotion Bijou without having to constantly drop $150 just to shave off a millimeter and it kind of snowballed from there.
If you're a cage hardware nerd like me, I can't stress enough how satisfying it is to invest the time to learn CAD and make your own designs. And while having a 3D printer sure does make prototyping easy — to say nothing of the fact that you can actually make your own long-term-wear cages — it's not a necessity. Did you know u/kink3d designed the Cobra without a 3D printer? In fact, to the best of my knowledge he still doesn't have one. And like me, he learned CAD on his own just to design a better cage.
And you know, you can probably use that printer and those CAD skills for other things.
If you want some more information, I have some resources:
r/3DPrintedChastity — fairly active community but not always on-topic or perhaps I'm unclear as to what the topic is.
r/ChastityCageDesign — a very niche community I made; I may be one of the only posters.
And an article I have on the topic: https://newbiesub.substack.com/p/designing-and-printing-your-own-cage (god, I've gotten so much better at CAD since I wrote that article).
