Need Feedback: A family photo I shared with permission went viral, and I feel really icky about it
I need some collective feedback because my sense-of-justice alarm bells are going off, but I’m not sure if I’m overreacting or what the appropriate response even is. Bit of a long story, sorry.
So, a few days ago, my aunt was looking through old family photos and found a picture of herself from the 1980s. She shared it with me, and with her permission and encouragement, I posted it online.
Since then, the image has gone viral. On one hand, some of it has been funny or harmless. People are making memes, recreations, edits, and jokes around it. On the other hand, I’ve also been getting a lot of troll comments, sexist remarks, weird assumptions, and harassment from random users. It has started to feel really gross and overwhelming.
One strange silver lining is that my aunt had actually run the photo through an image upscaler before sending it to me, so now a lot of people are flagging it or assuming it’s artificial. In this case, that’s almost a relief, because it means people don’t seem to realize it’s a real person, and no one is trying to identify her or track me or her down from the image.
Still, I feel conflicted. My aunt gave permission for me to share it, and the attention isn’t all negative, but the way people talk about women online is making me feel really icky. It’s also weird seeing a real family photo turned into internet content and passed around by strangers. My aunt finds it amusing, and I think is secretly delighted by the attention.
I guess I’m mostly venting, but I also genuinely want feedback from others here. My justice sensitivity is screaming at me, but I don’t know what action, if any, makes sense. Do I ignore it? Take the post down? Say something? Let it burn itself out? So far, I've just ignored it, hoping it burns itself out.
Has anyone else dealt with something like this, where something you shared with good intentions suddenly got pulled into weird internet behavior? How would you handle it?
